Description:
2003 Eccup reservoir, situated off Alwoodley Lane/Eccup Moor Road, with Sand Moor golf course adjacent. The reservoir was constructed in 1897 by Leeds Corporation to supply water for the city. Two service reservoirs were also built at Weetwood and Woodhouse Moor. New impounding reservoirs were built at Fewston, Swinsty and Lindley.

I first visited Eccup Reservoir in July 1942. My brother and I had walked from our home in Dewsbury to Otley,and were on our way back to Roundhay Park,choosing from the 1" map what promised to be the picturesque route via Eccup and the Reservoir Dam.On arriving there,we found a notice forbidding one to cross,but since the only detour would involve quite a few extra miles of walking,we decided to risk the crossing.Not unexpectedly we were soon approached by an armed sentry and escorted to the Guard Room in the Keeper's House.The Guard Commander,an RSM, rebuked us - especially my brother,who as a soldier on leave should really have been put on a charge - but thankfully wasn't! An interesting feature of the Reservoir in those days were the cables and wires stretched over the water to prevent the landing of seaplanes.
