John Smeaton was born in 1724 at Austhorpe Lodge, moving to London at the age of 18, initially to train as an attorney. He began a manufacturing firm in 1750 making mathematical instruments before becoming a mechanical and civil engineer most famous for building the Eddystone Lighthouse off the Plymouth coast. He also worked on the Aire and Calder Navigation and the Firth-Clyde Canal. John Smeaton died in 1792 and is buried at Whitkirk Church. This view shows the ivyclad remains of his workshop in the grounds of Austhorpe Lodge.
