Image shows a copy of a watercolour painting by W.R. Robinson from 1849. It was the impressive residence of James Garth Marshall esq. M.P. and is Headingley House off Kirkstall Lane. His London residence was 37 South Street, Grosvenor Square. The Marshall family owned Marshall & Co, flax spinners and manufacturers of linen thread, Marshall Street, Holbeck. John Marshall (1765-1845) bought Headingley House from James Bischoff in about 1815 at a cost of £7500. He enlarged it considerably by added a west wing for £2500. The estate includes 25 acres of farmland. The depiction of various livestock in the foreground of the painting demonstrates that this is a working farm.
