New Peacock Inn, Elland Road

New Peacock Inn, Elland Road
Description:
5th November 1963 New Peacock Inn, adjacent to Elland Road Football Ground. Large painted wall sign advertises BYB beer (Bentley's Yorkshire Brewery). This public house was demolished to provide part of the route for junction 2 of the M621, roundabout and Stadium Way. The 'New' Peacock closed in 1974, the landlord and landlady at the time were Sammy and Betty Redmond. They were expecting to become tenants of the New Inn at Churwell, but the brewery gave it instead to footballing hero John Charles. The disappointed couple became managers of the Old Peacock which was situted 300 yards away on the opposite side of the road.

The old peacock inn should have been demolished, not this beautiful pub!

I Understand that the two "Peacock" pubs had contradictory names. In the 1950s the New Peacock was older than the Old Peacock. Presumably both were replacements for earlier establishments. Does anyone know anything about this?

In response to Don South's comment. I have to disagree Don. I knew the Old Peacock in the late 1950's to early 1960's, when Bill & Anne Fox had it. It was a great pub. - - - AND there was always FREE TRIPE on the bar on a Saturday lunchtime. Come on Don. The New Peacock couldn't match that. But to be fair though. Neither pub., should have been allowed to disappear. The ambience and atmosphere was never the same when the Old Peacock was rebuilt.

my great-great-great-grandfather, William Bradley, was the landlord in 1851, his son Edward took it over by 1861. See: http://www.oswild.org/hobnob/family/john/william-bradley.html

At the back of this pub was Holbeck Cricket Club, it was well supported when I was a young un in the late forties. A village atmosphere existed here in those far off but fondly remembered years.
