I remember going here as a small child; I think it was run by a Mrs Dews. She had a charity collection box where you inserted a penny and it zig-zagged down to the bottom, fascinating me!

I lived at 10, Wetherby Road from 1962 through to leaving home after university in 1976. This building, perhaps 100 yards from our house, was a Middland Bank and my account was held there until 1980. The next shop along, after the little garage, was one of the most famous fish and chip shops in Yorkshire - not even Harry Ramsden’s could beat their chips! Just off the photo to the left, across Oakwood Lane, was the library, where I earned half a crown every Saturday for returning great piles of books to their shelves and spent hours on other days reading. As a very young had, I walked with my mother from our earlier home in Harehills every fortnight to borrow books and the local police station was above the library. A school friend later lived in it when it was turned into a flat.
