Town Hall, the Lord Mayor's Suite

Town Hall, the Lord Mayor
26th July 1888. This photograph shows the Lord Mayor's Suite as it looked in preparation for the reception of the Shah of Persia. Situated in first floor rooms along the East side of the Town Hall, it was newly decorated in 1858 to receive Queen Victoria on the opening of the Town Hall on 7th September. The Byzantine styled wall paper in buff and gold was designed by Owen Jones and manufactured by J. Trumble and Co of Leeds. The beautiful Brussels carpet is worked in a Persian pattern in subtle tones of green, crimson and white. The walnut furniture consists of divans and various styles of chairs all upholstered in luxurious, deeply buttoned, rich green velvet. The decoration and furnishing of these rooms was the work of Kendall and Co. The woodwork was grained in imitation of walnut by the firm of Hummerston. The chandeliers suspended from the roof are of crystal.
