St Aidan
27th April 1965 Image shows the exterior of St Aidan's Church on Roundhay Road with Elford Place West on the right. Built in 1891-4 by R.J. Johnson & A.C. Hicks, St Aidan's joins Basilican form with Romanesque style. The image shows a double-apsed aisled basilica with a basilican chapel attached on the south eastern side. The interior of the church is famous for the large display of mosaics in the apse and on the concelli walls by Frank Brangwyn. Red brick and mosaic were chosen as construction materials as they were easy to maintain in Leeds polluted atmosphere. A large board in front of the church lists mass times.
