Undated This 1950s image shows blocks of four double fronted back-to-back terraced houses flanked by yards originally built to house shared outside toilets. Toilets were shared by up to 30 people from several households with keys kept behind house door on large wooden fobs to prevent theft. A woman kneels in front of no.27 on the left 'donkey stoning' the front step to whiten it. Scrubbing the front step and the toilet seat was a weekly chore for women who judged one another on how well the job was done.
