11th February 1937. Aerial view looking east of housing development on the Gipton estate. Houses in varying stages of development can be seen on St. Wilfrid's Crescent in the foreground and the Amberton's in the background.
Certainly the,Circus,.The church in the foreground is St.Wilfrids. Our family were the first tenants of 21,St.Wilfrids Drive, upon its completion in July 1937.The cluster of houses approx. at 11 o,clock position of the church, is the Drive. The 2pr. of semis directly facing, is the rear of Nos.19-25[r/l].Our house, and the neighbours, were Known as 'sunshine houses'.This was because they were the only ones in the street that were built with a bay window. this window faced due south,as seen in the photo. It also had the unique facility of being on metal runners. This enabled the householders to open up the whole window space to the openair. We were apparently allocated this particular property, because my sister at that time was convalescing from TB. in the Hollies Sanatorium at Weetwood. The area in the center of the Circus was commonly known as the 'woodyard'. And our favourite place for community soccer and cricket etc. Fond memories indeed.I left there in 1959. My mother lived there until about 1972.
I grew up on St Wilfrids Drive, my parents still live there(no.47) just out of view on this pic. We spent all our summers playing on the huge grassed area of the "bottom square" which has now been turned into a car park area. There are many more houses now, a school (on the circus) and even the view in the distant looks different now.
I grew up on the Gipton estate on Easterly cross (just off the picture and possibly not yet built when the picture was taken) I remember pe school going to a child minders refered to as 'Aunt Jessie' at the end of the 'S' curved road (Foundry walk iirc) I don't live in Leeds any more, just brousing the pics for happy memories.
