In the 1950's, this was called 'Whinmoor garage' from where my Dad bought our first second-hand car. It was a Vauxhall 10 reg JNW 80 (1939 I think), and the start of a string of 'old bangers' that followed. Later in the 1960's, I used this same garage every Saturday evening to buy 'four gallons' of petrol to take my girlfriend - in my 1950 Morris Minor - to her mother's caravan at Flamborough. The garage had the old-style tall pumps with those illuminated lamp-shade signs on top. My four-gallons of National Benzole always cost the same - 19s.8d. I always paid with a pound-note, and as most people then would, told the chap to, "keep the change." Despite putting Premium grade petrol into the old car, it still wouldn't go up Garrowby Hill without stopping and selecting first gear.

I remember this when it was thriving.Routledge who used to have a garage in Scholes took it over in late 50,s.Used to be the Rose dene cafe next door where my Grandma worked and the Kayes lived next door to the garage .Clearly remember getting off the last bus from Leeds at the Rose Dene stop after many nights out and walking down Stockheld lane and down the railway line to our house in the dark.
