The empty shop is Tassy's hairdressers - seem to remember it was a predecessor to Vidal Sassoon ie. the place to get trendy haircuts in those days?

My cousin Susan Hector had a job here in the 60's as a Saturday girl. I seem to remember that the glass windows at the front here were all tinted black. I used to pass this way sometimes on my way to work 1974-1978 when I worked at the then Negas on New York Rd.

So different to my memories of New Briggate. If I stood with my back to Lewis's I would see the Odeon cinema, Youngmans fish and chip shop, the Assembly Rooms, Grand Theatre and the Tower cinema. Where, in this picture, would their place have been?

I started work at Tassy's in Bay Horse Yard in Jan 1969. We moved to New Briggate in the early 70's and the shop closed early 1979 - not a wise move, too big to ever be profitable. I think we had something like 40 chairs over the 3 floors. I had some great years there, working and partying with Tassy, Kevin, Martin, Brian & Beverley, Chris(tine), Carol, Georgette, Philip, Alex, Max, Maggie, Kim, Rod & Vanessa, Graham & Wendy, Jazz, Philipa, Joanne, Geoff & Angela, Bob, Stuart, Rick, Garrick & Steve, John - and who can forget Marco, Agnes & Vidal, . A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then maybe someone else can fill some of the other names in.

Yes very happy memories working there, pitty no one has any inside pics? The place would still look relevant today I think. I approach retirement, but can remember my first day as if it was yesterday, for the most part washing Sue,s (reception) hair all day long, on the very top floor. I met my future wife there as a clent, and stiil together. I haven paid for a hair cut since 1975, thanks to my good friend Geoff!
