Middleton Lodge was built C 1760 and is thought to have been designed by James Paine a Yorkshire Architect. It was the residence of the Brandling family until 1860s. Later in the 19th Century until 1920 it was occupied by the Maude family, Edmund Ward was a partner in the Middleton Estate and Colliery Company.
