My grandfather, George Clough, was a"Druid". He belonged to the Ancient Order of Druids which was a friendly society. The club was not a working mens' club as the term is usually understood.

The Order of Druids now Druids Sheffield Friendly Society was based in Balm Walk until it moved to Rotherham in recent years. The Ancient Order of Druids or AOD was not a Friendly Society it was formed as a men's Fraternal Order in London in 1781. There were several splits from the AOD which resulted in the formation of several Friendly Societies providing sick and funeral benefits. The Order of Druids being one of them. I am a member of both the Druids Sheffield Friendly Society and the AOD
