View of the interior of Quarry Hill Flats showing the refuse disposal system. This was the revolutionary Garchey system of water-borne refuse disposal, used at Quarry Hill for the first time in this country, in which ashes, tins and other small articles would be put into special sinks in each flat from which chutes would take them to the central incinerator, which would use the heat generated as a power source. Persistent problems with the system led to it being one of the major failures of the flats.
