Photograph of Ernest Smith, a noted Morley cricketer. Born on 19th October 1869 he was the youngest son of William Smith, author of "Morley Ancient and Modern". He received a triple blue at Oxford University in cricket, rugby and association football and later played for Yorkshire, being in the Championship winning side of 1893. Despite being known as one of the games' greatest hitters, in the last game of the season he batted for 60 minutes without scoring when Yorkshire needed to avoid defeat to win the Championship.
