With reference to David Wall's comment. The THE MORLEY LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY YEAR BOOK 1965-1968, (Morley Library has a copy), carries an article on this dig. However, this manor house is a bit of an enigma. It was occupied until 1952/3, when at which time it was demolished. It was a chance look at an old map in 1967 that brought its identity to the notice of the M.L.H.S. But it appears that no one knew of its existence. Even the landowner had no information, and his own plans etc., were of little use on the subject. There was no previous history to be found anywhere. That particular area of land was about to be 'developed', so an emergency dig was organised and carried out; the results of which appear in the Year Book. With regard to the actual location:- The 'dig report' says that the site is at the side of The Zion Chapel on Hart Hill Lane, and there is a rough sketch showing where 'X' marks the spot. Unfortunately the chapel is not shown, and there are no other bench-marks to give any clues as to the exact location. I was in this area recently (18-5-2009), and found that the chapel building ( which is situated where Hart Hill Lane terminates), is still there, but has been converted into living accommodation, and there is housing immediately below it. If, as the Society says, the site was about to be built on in the early months of 1968, then the housing immediately below the chapel building could well be sitting atop the site of the old Manor House. There is an interesting addendum to the report in the form of a transcription from a recording of an interview with a Miss Shepherd, who was a former resident at the Manor House. Perhaps tapes of this interview are still available from the M.L.H.S. For anyone interested, it is well worth borrowing the Year Book from Morley Library.
