I was in the 6th form at Allerton Grange from 1967-69. Every Friday we were coerced in to contributing to the Swimming Pool Fund. I don't think it was exactly mandatory to contribute, but nobody would think of refusing. I never got to even see the inside of this pool, yet alone use it.But I am sure at least one square inch was paid for by my weekly contributions.Hope it is paid off by now ?

I'm in the sixth form now, there was something wrong with the heating of the pool and they said it was too expensive to repair so they filled it with tarmac and now it is used as a dinning room for the younger students. I would have loved a swimming pool!

I must have only just left just before the swimming pool was built. It was a great school but I had a long way to walk each day from the Lingfields, when the weather was bad.

It is hard to imagine that the pool once looked like that! A few weeks ago (before it was being set up to be demolished for our new building) i went in and it was freezing cold and looks nothing like that in the picture - What a total mess, What a shame.

I went to Allerton Grange around 1962-1967 and I remember taking a six penny piece (pre-decimalisation) every week towards the cost of the building the swimming pool - but I never swam in it but some of my class mates did. A local singer I think it was Franky Vaugan gave or lent money for the pool.

in 1965 i was in the commerce class. one of our duties in 1965 was going around all the other classes collecting the few pence from all the other kids once a week. surprisingly i still managed to pass my gce in commerce even though most of the lessons were taken up collecting for the pool.

I went to the school when the pool was in fair nick. My lads go to the new school now. There was talk of a sports facility with a pool which the local community could also use. Now that plan has been revised and I think they want to sell some of the land to build on. So much for encouraging our young people into excercise and sport! The new scholl is nice, but I still miss the old one, the leaky roof, the draughty windows and Wally Blackburn.

This incarnation of the pool collapsed sometime in the early nineties under a heavy fall of snow (I remember it being pretty rickety and damn drafty). A new and better canopy was built over the same pool.

I'm pretty sure it was Ronnie Hilton and not Frankie Vaughan who was reputed to have helped fund the pool.

I remember this. I am the little girl in the middle. I represented the pupils for this opening. I used the pool regularly in PE lessons. We had to walk barefooted to the changing rooms. It was cold in winter. I also swam in competitions for my house Bannister.
