Britannia Mill, Britannia Road
June 1970. Image shows the newest building at the Britannia Mill of William Baines & Son in Britannia Road. By this time this was the only building of the mill left standing - the rest having been cleared away for new developments on the Howley Park Estate by Murco, Fastnet (Mermaid) and Asda. Instead of demolishing this building too, Asda decided to renovate it and turn it into their offices and technical department. The rusty metal in the foreground shows what had been thrown into the mill dam. The dam went from the height of the grass bank on the left hand side to the clay floor in the foreground. This brick building is of a type designed by T.A. Buttery, a local architect, about the time of World War 1 and could have been an expansion or fire replacement.
