Description: Undated. Image show where the beck at Thorner meets the bottom of Main Street. Visible on the left of the beck is Westfield Lane. On the left of Main Street in the distance are properties numbered 78 to 88. In the foreground on the right of Main Street are numbers 71 to 79, a row of stone built terraced houses. User Comments: Name: Trevor Dixon Comment: The photographer was stood at the edge of the ford for this shot.The ford was a favourite area for me in the 1950's when I used to stay with my Auntie Joan & Uncle Walter and cousin Paul. The house they lived in was No.82 Main Street, which is the second house in the third block on the left. As a boy from Hunslet this was a magical place for me, being away from the industrial area and getting clean air into my lungs. I spent many long School holidays at Thorner, where occasionally I got to help bring in the harvest with my cousin. Sadly both my beloved Auntie and Uncle are no longer with us ,but I have treasured memories of my time spent with them and of the tractors which used to splash through the ford much faster when we boys were stood by the railings. Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: David Ian North Comment: I recall as a young lad (no more than aged 10, if that) in the early 1950's I used to very occasionally go with other kids to Thorner. I remember there was a ford and we used to collect windfall apples and/or pears (with permission) in a garden or gardens at the back of houses on the left coming from Leeds. What I don't recall is how we got there, as it is a long way from Osmondthorpe in Leeds! It almost certainly wasn't by bikes (I never had one) so I suspect it may have been by tram to at least part of the way, or perhaps as kids walking that distance was never thought a problem. Fun times.
