We were homeless in 1968/9 and were housed by the couincil in the bungalow at South Lodge. My Mother and 5 children I was the eldest at 14. no adult males were allowed. Conditions were extreamly basic even for that time, very unhealthy and overcrowded. GPs refused to come to the bungalow because of the conditions. 10 large families lived in a comunal area that would be considered to be to small for a single family now. One gas cooker could be used in another building, one toilet was available throughout the day, it was filthy and it was cold the sixties were not swinging for us

We lived in South Lodge for a short time in the late 1950's. In order to 'hide' the fact that we lived there, our address was recorded at school (Bewerley Street) as No. 2, Lane End Place.
