Undated. Aerial photograph of Moorhead Mill on Gildersome Lane. The terrace of Springfield Villas is in the bottom centre, with Suffield Cottage and Suffield House to the right. These houses are still there but the mill is now gone, having been replaced by housing on Suffield Road and Suffield Crescent.

i believe this photograph to be of a mill and terrace housing at the top of gildersome lane the mill and adjacent fields are now gone replaced by private and council housing

I maybe wrong ,but this looks like a shot of the mill that used to be on Gildersome Lane,at New Farnley.The mill is no longer there,but the houses around it are.

My Grandfather Harold Victor Tetlow was Chief Engineer at the mill, possibly commencing in the 40s but certainly throughout the 50s and into the mid 60s. He lived in the house on the right hand side of the entrance. As a child standing on a stool at the small kitchen window of that house I watched coke being tipped from lorries to feed the boilers for the huge steam engines that powered the mill and bales of raw wool being hoisted up to the first floor via a rope ready for processing.

We used to live at 3 Moorhead right next to the Mill my parents had a shop called Beryl's Mill Shop in the early 60's before I was born I have never seen a photo of the shop so if anyone can help please get in touch

The Suffield housing estate gets it name from,Suffield Farm on the other side of the main road. I understand that the lady who lives at the farm,used to do some cleaning work on the estate whilst it was being built.When she asked whoever was in charge of construction what the estate would be called,he asked her for a suggestion,hence the name Suffield.

iUsed to play at Royal Oak Farm as a lad with Jack and Edith Holroyds grandsons..They worked the farm..i still live next door to where Mr and Mrs Holroyd used to live in Moorland Close whiich is still to be built in the photo...

I believe my grandfather Harry Hodgson used to be night watchman at this mill in the early 1960's. I have a memeory of walking along there. Harry lived at 25 Greenfield Avenue. He was also boiler man at the mill in the centre of the village. In the days before H&S we used to go to see him. One of the steam engine was called Sabina, after the mill owners daughter so he told me. My mum also worked as a weaver at the central mill. Again, before H&S rules we used to go into see her after school. We were even allowed to replenish the bobbins in the magazine on the looms.
