St. Martin
May/June 2006 View of the stone built St. Martin's Church from near Chapeltown Road. On the left is St. Martin's Church Institute in St. Martin's View. There is a glimpse of propeties in St. Martin's Avenue, right. The church dates from 1879-1881 and was designed by architects, Adams and Kelly of Leeds in the Decorated Style. It was built at a cost of £9,000. The west tower was never completed. Photograph courtesy of James W. Bell.

Mary Fisher

May father's parents were married here when it was new, they were the third couple to be married here. My parents were married here and so was I and I was baptised here. Three of our children were baptised here, two were in the choir. For the last forty years we've lived in this street, my husband was a server and we were both on the P.C.C., the church is part of our life.

The tree which obscures part of the church was planted in the 1970s (?) by Geoff Cook in memory of his wife who had died suddenly and untimely. This aspect shows the east window and the south porch, which was originally the entrance - before the streets were built. the small north porch on St Martin's View, opposite the 'Victoria Hall' (the parish hall) is now the entrance.
