Bradford Road, the
1970s. View of the stone built, single storey 'Iron Man' Chapel located on the Bradford-Wakefield Road near Tingley roundabout. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.

User Comments:

So named after the Iron Man coal cutting machine that was developed for use at the nearby Topcliffe(aka Balaclava and West Ardsley)pit. It was innovative in it's day and the pits owner was highly thought of by his workforce.Sadly, the pit became a victim of the great depression and beyond......not through lack of reserves(est at 60 years) but unable to find backers for development/modernisation.
