Dewsbury Road, in the direction of the Cardigan Arms
1969. View of Dewsbury Road looking towards the Cardigan Arms (the white building in the background). The side of the graveyard, belonging to Woodkirk Church (St Mary's), is sheeted up to discreetly screen off the grave diggers from traffic. Image used courtesy of Peter Aldred. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.

User Comments:

The graveyard is screened because many graves were being moved due to road widening. If you look closely at the stone wall by the Leeds bound bus stop at Syke crossroads you will see the odd carved letter or pattern fragment. That's what they did with some of the grave stones.
