Tingley Methodist members at the sod cutting ceremony for the new Sunday School

Tingley Methodist members at the sod cutting ceremony for the new Sunday School
Description:
20th April 1908. Image shows some of the Tingley Methodist members involved in the opening of Tingley Methodist Sunday School in Westerton Road. The sod cutting ceremony took place on the very cold and wintry Easter Monday of 1908. Those who took part were issued with a certificate to commemorate the occasion. Most of them are women who have brought along their garden spades and are wearing mens' flat cloth caps. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.

Comment:
I would think that the wearing of the flat caps would have been a pointed, but humorous gesture; perhaps even a sarcastic one. 'THESE FEMALES WERE DOING MEN'S WORK'.
