Description: 29th June 2007
View of the Tiled Hall in the Central Library, opened as a cafe in June 2007, showing the entrance to the Art Gallery on the left. When the Municipal Buildings were opened on 17th April 1884 by the Mayor of Leeds, Alderman Edwin Woodhouse, this was the Reading Room and was used for the opening ceremony. After the adjoining Art Gallery opened on 3rd October 1888 the Tiled Hall was converted into a sculpture gallery. It remained so until 1955 when the Commercial and Technical Library moved into this space and the ceiling and walls of the Hall became hidden for many years behind a false ceiling, bookcases and panelling. The Music Library then occupied this room between 1998 and 1999. After the library re-opened in 2000 following rewiring and refurbishment, the Hall was closed to the public until the recent restoration which brought its original magnificence back into view.
