My Great Grandfather Sheard Roberts worked here most of his life. He was a pit deputy and in 1926 he was involved in an accident with 5 other men when the cage he was in plummetted to the bottom of the coal face after the cage operator accidentally pulled the wrong lever. All the men including Sheard suffered injuries to their feet ,legs and hands with the impact of the cage hitting the coal face hard and at speed. Sadly Sheard never worked again and never fully recovered...he died within about 18mths of the accident.
