Upper Green Road, William Arthur Dixon, a cobbler and greengrocer
c1930. Image shows William Arthur Dixon, a cobbler and greengrocer of Upper Green Road, standing outside his shop. He is pictured with a young girl and a man, wearing a flat cap, who appears to be seated in a wheeled chair. It is possibly adapted from a dining chair as the chair legs are just visible. William Arthur Dixon is mentioned in Kelly's Trade Directory for 1922 and 1936. Image used courtesy of Peter Aldred. Photograph from the David Atkinson Archive.

The man in the Wheelchair is Arthur Dixon. He owned the Greengrocers shop and also used to sell pie and peas! As a small boy I passed this shop every day walking to Westerton school and remember Arthur in his wheelchair. Some times (unfortunately) getting teased by the local kids. I remember he was married with a son. He had some deformity of his legs but wasn't paralized. This shop is now long gone and 2 bungelows are built on the land which is situated at the top of Baghill Road on the opposite side to the corner shop and next to a row of brick terraced houses (no's 1 - 9 Baghill Road)
