Windmill Hill, view of Windmill

Windmill Hill, view of Windmill
Description:
3rd May 1912. At the time of this photograph this area was known locally as Lushpot. The Windmill (which still stands) was on the top of Windmill Hill, now called Lotherton Lane after the construction of the Aberford-by-pass in 1961. The mill dates from at least the 15th Century, in 1458 it was the property of the Abbot of Kirkstall. The ironwork was removed for salvage in World War II and the top 6 feet were taken down after a fire caused by vandals made it unsafe. The houses visible are now demolished, they didn't have a piped drinking water supply and were dependent on a well even as late as the 1940s. This was demolished in the 1980s.

Just a bit more information about the photo, my dad bought the stone from its owner, who had knocked it down. That was in the early 80s, we took it to barwick in elmet by tractor and trailer, and my dad had his house built using the stone. The house is called Windmill cottage on long lane. {near the phone box} We found both mill stones, one is used in the wall of the house, another is stored in Garforth.
