Adel Churchyard, monument
Description:
Undated. Image shows an elaborate monument in Adel Churchyard. A statue of an angel is mounted on a plinth underneath a canopy supported by four columns and surrounded by railings. Words inscribed on the canopy read 'Until the day break and shadows flee away'. The monument is dedicated in the memory the memory of 'Susannah Jane, wife of James Audus Hirst, died Feb. 26th 1884 aged 33 years, also of James Audus Hirst, died Sept. 17th 1896 aged 50 years'.

Comment:
The railings are no longer there, possibly removed during the war. The angel has also lost its right arm and the whole monument is now quite weather-worn, even so it is still one of the most impressive in the churchyard.

Comment:
My grandmother's mother (Mary Jane Birdsall and her sister Annie Birdsall) worked for the Hirsts of Adel as nurse maid and cook in late 1870's early 1880's. Photos of the Hirst babies are strangely marooned a long way from their parents out here in Sydney Australia.
