Description:
Undated. An early view of the High Street showing Percy Bownas's Circulating Library on the right. The windows are full of items, including a series of black and white photographs of what appear to be local scenes similar to this one. The Leeds and Yorkshire Mercury and the Yorkshire Herald advertising boards make references to 'Mr. Brodrick and the Viceroy' and 'Brodrick and Curzon official explanation'. William St. John Freemantle Brodrick was Secretary of State for war from 1900 to 1903 and George Nathaniel Curzon of Kedleston was Viceroy and Govenor General of India between 1899 and 1905. This possibly dates the image to around the turn of the Century. A young girl wearing a tam o' shanter minds the baby carriage.
