Undated. View of the engine 'Sylvia', one of the engines that pulled the 'Paddy train' along the railway line from Waterloo Pit at Temple Newsam to the coal staith (Waterloo Main Colliery Depot) at the junction of Easy Road and Cross Green Lane. This train brought coal from the colliery to be unloaded at the staith and taken by coal merchants for distribution to local households. It was also used to transport colliery workers to and from the pit at the beginning and end of their shift. Photograph taken from the end of May Street off Easy Road.

I remember seeing this engine (and its sister named 'Antwerp'I think)as it used to cross the road near to The Bridgefield Hotel, Cross Green. There was a man in a little wooden hut who used to come out and stop the traffic with a red flag when an engine came.

This line was at the end of my grandmothers street, Glencoe Place. As young lads, we would run and climb up the wooden fencing to watch and wave to the driver, a bit tame these days but good fun then. If there are any pictures of The Glencoe streets out there, why not send them in to be put on the archive.

In fact, he used to cycle from scott hall road to EAST END PARK where the BRIDGEFIELD PUB was, put his bike on the paddy train,go down the pit to fill his (STINT OF COAL) off at the coal face. Then take his bike on the paddy train return journey. Cycle all the way back home to Scott Hall Road again, have his piping hot dinner which my mum had ready for him. Then he would lay on the Sofa in his coal muck (as we used to call it),Sleep for about 3 hours. Then he would waken, get a bath ready to go out for a few pints. Comm 11-sept-07

Ian is correct with the name of 'Antwerp' being the sister to Sylvia. The engine is about today, it is stored at North Yorkshire Moor Railway. It does need some serious restoration though. I'm too young to remember these trains running through Cross Green, however I do remember the old streets mentioned above. I lived in Charles Avenue from the early seventies. I have looked at some old maps of the area and they show a metal bridge that carried the tracks for these trains behind the Bridgefield pub crossing the 'navvy' close to the rear of Charles Avenue. Many thanks for sharing this photo, I'd love to see some more.

I was lucky enough as a child of about 9 or 10 to ride on the "Paddy," coming back on the late shift with my Grandmother Hannah McNichol.She was the cook in the canteen at Waterloo Main and I was allowed to travel back with her as far as the Bridgefield.This would be in the late 1940s early 50s. We would then walk home as we lived in East park Place.

I remember being taken to a Coal distribution centre from the bottom of Easy Road, Leeds, East end park by my Mother. This was back in the 1960's. My Mother did not buy any Coal , but talked to the people there as she told me that we were related? My Mothers family name was Pearson. I have also done some research into the early years of Ernie Wise of Morecambe and Wise fame. Ernie used to live around the corner from here in Oxley Street. He also used to deliver Coal with a horse and cart.

I worked at Waterloo main colliery ,serving part of my apprenticeship from 1965 till being transferred to lofthouse colliery in1967 prior to its closure. The colliery ,which was a mine that could be accessed by a shaft or a drift . Seams attainable from the shaft where the very narrow black bed(2 foot high. 60cm) and the Beeston.The drift made way to the silkstone and Middleton little which was very wet both roof and floor. Names that conjure up memories are,electrical engineer Pat Wilson,foreman Charlie mason,Manager Fred Vollans,Electricians Billy greenwood,Tommy Hunt, Roy Hirst,and stan Hardcastle whom I worked with for many years at Lofthouse.As for the ubiquitous jimmy savile visiting the latter opencast,he was a Bevin boy at Waterloo and visited on occasion to call on old workmates,turning out in a yellow e type jag and a blue and black broad pin striped suit, needless to say ,and a shock of blonde hair.
