Mrs Millie Gerzefsky outside her shop in the North Street area.
Description:
c1918. Image shows Mrs. Millie Gerzefsky outside her shop in the North Street area. When growing up in Russia, between the ages of 14 and 16 years, she had worked in an atelier, making costumes for the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. She is seen standing in the doorway of her shop and in the window a large sign advertises 'Jersey Coat Knitter, stockings, socks etc. made to order. Refooting a speciality'. As knitted socks and stockings became worn it was more economical to have them re-footed than to replace them. The window is decorated with many knitted items of clothing including hats, berets and scarves. Photograph courtesy of Donald Dean.
