Eleventh Earl (the), formerly Stanhope Arms
21st December 1983 Image shows the Eleventh Earl, formerly Stanhope Arms which stands at the junction of Broadway with Fink Hill. It was built for the land agent for the Spencer-Stanhope Estate, John Hardy, as a dwelling house and dates from c1750. It is listed as the 'Stanhope Arms' (Victualler, John Oddy) in Baines' Directory of the County of York published in 1822. In 1970 the name was changed to The Eleventh Earl to avoid confusion with the Stanhope Hotel in Calverley Lane.

As I started working at the then known Stanhope Arms in 1972 and was a bar maid there for 6 years which takes us to 1978 and I do not recall the name changing by the time I left, can anyone remember the exact year as I know it is not 1970.

Gordon Toulson

I read Julia Lawrence's comment regarding the change of name. I moved to a house on Broadway in December 1971 and for the next few years I frequented the Stanhope Arms with friends. I seem to recall that the landlord/manager was called Ernest. It was certainly the Stanhope Arms for quite a long while after 1970 before the name changed. We used to visit the Stanhope Hotel too, but it wasn't very popular with us.
