Description: C1970s. View of St. Mary's Church and school with St. Mary's Street running between the two buildings. A parliamentary grant of £12,520 was awarded under the Million Act for the building of this Church in 1823. It appears to be in a semi-derelict state with some broken windows. It was scheduled for demolition in 1976 and the west tower was demolished in 1979. Photograph courtesy of Terry Cryer. User Comments: Name: frances wicks/kirlew Comment: This is st.charles` school, and this view is of the junior boy`s playground-the girl`s and infants playground was at the other side of the school. The old church is gone now,but the school still stands,and is a charity shop,selling second hand furniture etc-upstairs is home to over 30 men who would otherwise be homeless. When i went to this school - late 50`s - mr.somerville was the headmaster, and the main teacher i remember is mr. white - i was in his class for two years.The view on the right is straight up new york road, and the woodpecker would have been more or less behind the lamp post there.. I remember him well his brother peter too Email: Not displayed ________________________________________________________________________________ Name: Francis Kenneth Rytel Comment: TThis is a photo of what use to be St.Charles R.C.school.I went there,graduating in 1936.I lived on the otherside of St.Mary's church in a street that was called New Church Place.I lived there 'til Aug.1940 and went into the RAF 'til May 1946.Went to the States in 1949,where,(touch wood)I still reside on Long Island,New York.
