if i remember rightly, bancrofts had to be demolished because a woman driving past, swerved to avoid running a cat over, and went straight through the window. the amoco petrol station is now a car sales pitch, victoria garage.

I always thought this building was badly damaged by a gas explosion. It occurred in the early morning during the mid 90s.

I mostly agree with Jane, but I didn't think the whole building was demolished, they just turned the demolished showroom into the downstairs of the houses(and I thought it was a fox not a cat!)

My wife and I used to work with Bill Bancroft's daughter-in-law, Carol (who was a Tracer), at Jos Booth's crane works in Rodley in the mid 1960's. Her husband, Mick, was a motor-bike racer in those days. I too remember the car crashing into the bike showroom. We lived in Newlaithes Garth at the bottom of the Victorias in the 1970's.

This was formerly Airedale House (once in use by Miss Little's dame school from about 1880-1913). It caught fire in about 1936 then Bill Bancroft used it as a motorbike showroom and for repairs (continued by his sons) until the late 1990s when someone crashed into the front door and demolished the building. The property that stands there now was a school built for the Church of the Latter Day Saints who vacated it in (about) 2009.
