Description: 2007/8. Image shows the demolition of old buildings at South Leeds High School, Middleton Road. The school opened as Belle Isle County Secondary School in c1959. It ceased to operate as a school in 2006 when pupils transferred to the new P.F.I. South Leeds School adjacent to South Leeds Stadium. For many years it was known as 'Merlyn Rees'. My dad, Harold Geoffrey Wright was Head of Science when it opened. I remember him travelling from Beeston on the no.3 circular bus and these were only introduced when the trams stopped running to Middleton (from other photos and comments this was March 1959). He had a hard job getting it through our thick skulls but something must have stuck. I also have fond memories of Mr Wright who was a real Gentlemen. I respected most of the teachers at the school who did their best or us.
