Wood Vine Street, gas lamp

August 1977. View of Wood Vine Street, off Bradford Road, showing one of the last gas lamps to survive in Stanningley, a pre-war Foster lantern. On the right are houses numbered 14, 16 and 18 while at the bottom of the street is a farm building which is part of Wood Nook Farm. The farm has since been demolished and the site is now a small industrial estate. The gas lamp has also gone, replaced by electric around 1981, but the rest of the street is virtually unaltered except for recent road surfacing. Taken from the book 'When the Streets Were Lit by Gas' by Philip Croft Tordoff.

this photograph is taken on wood vine street just off bradford road in stanningley.the farm building at the bottom of the street was part of woodnook farm now demolished .the farm area is now a small industrial estate.the street itself stands virtually unchanged apart from recent road resurfacing.its nice to see this photograph as the area from stanningley bottom to dawsons corner has not been well recorded.

I have studied this photo several times and knew it was somewhere in Stanningley, but could not place it. However, I think it is Woodvine Street. I lived near to this area back in the late 1970's.

This is outside 10 Woodvine St. The gas lamp was replaced by electric about 1981, and sold to a resident of the street. The gas lamp (or one a little further up the road) was still working until that time. The garage at the bottom of the street collapsed due to subsidence as did the house adjoining it. Woodnook farm disappeared in conjuction with building a new Asda store. The hill in the distance is Owlcotes, Pudsey.
