Lawnswood Cemetery, Memorial
1994. Image shows part of a memorial in Lawnswood Cemetery, off the West side of Otley Road. In the background an angel holds a torch aloft in a kneeling position. The statue in the foreground is holding a jar. The chapels at Lawnswood Cemetery were designed by George Corson between 1870 and 1876 and the Crematorium was a later addition of 1905. Lawnswood Cemetery opened in 1875.

This is part of the Sam Wilson memorial...central angel hope and benevolence is the seated one (Faith is not shown). Sculpture by Edward Caldwell Spruce (buried in an unmarked grave in Beckett Street cemetery). Wilson's mill was where the Yorkshire Post Building was (Wellington Street). His art collection was gifted to Leeds city Art Gallery and for many years there was a room dedicated to him. on behalf of the Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery
