View of St. Aidan's Open-Cast Mine at methley. A railway track runs along the left. The area around Methley has been mined for coal for centuries; by the 21st century only open-cast mining remains, but this particular mine has closed following flooding of the area in 1988 when the mining operations caused the River Aire to burst its banks. The area is now being converted into a wetland nature reserve.
