St. Aidan
20th June 1972. View of St. Aidan's open-cast mine showing slag heaps and slurry ponds, with a railway track on the right. Coal has been mined in Methley for domestic use since at least the 14th century and for industrial use since the 18th century. In the 19th century increased demand for coal led to deep mines being sunk, but these have all closed. The open-cast mine here has also gone in 1988, when the River Aire poured into the void caused by mining. The area is now being turned into a wetland nature reserve.
