Thwaite Gate, Ferry
1888. View of the ferry at Thwaite Gate, where the River Aire meets the Aire and Calder Navigation Canal.

User Comments:

John Bean

Directly behind this building are the Knowsthorpe Locks, on the canal. The river in this era was on the side shown. Today, following much rerouting at the turn of the century, it's further behind this property in view, (probably lock keepers homes)on the opposite side of the canal. This building would have been known well by my ancestor William Gleig Bean who owned the Gibraltar leather Works in 1891, which was on the canal side around 500yds to the left of the pic. The section of the river with the ferry boat is now a canal lock basin, allowing boats to wait to use the locks. The chimney in the background was on the sewage treatment works at that time.
