Austhorpe Lane, Austhorpe Lodge, gatehouse

Undated. View shows on the left the gatehouse to Austhorpe Lodge, situated on Austhorpe Lane. On the right a man is herding cattle along the unmade road. Austhorpe Lodge is notable as being the birthplace, in 1724, of the celebrated engineer John Smeaton; it had been built in 1698 by his grandfather, also called John Smeaton, not long after the building of Austhorpe Hall (1694), a little to the north on Austhorpe Lane. Both Austhorpe Lodge and the gatehouse have now been demolished.

There is a building on Selby Road, at the entrance to Detroit Avenue, housing built on the site of Austhorpe Lodge, which has the type of roof shown in the picture. I had always understood this to be the gatehouse.

Hi. The house on 535 Selby Road, and the house shown in the photo here must be the same building. I am not sure if there were houses on both sides of this drive. I am not sure about any further info on this house, but I do definately remember it in the late 1950's/early 1960's, as sometimes I used to pass it en route from my house at Lulworth Crescent to the old Colton school (formerly at the end of School Lane/Colton Road East junction).
