Cottingley, long-distance view from Crow Nest Lane

Description:
1980s. Long-distance view looking south-west over to Cottingley from Crow Nest Lane. On the right, a footbridge is seen crossing the railway line, while on the left is Sulzers engineering factory. Beyond these, running from left to right across the middle is Ring Road Beeston, with Cottingley Drive leading off up towards the top of the photo. To the right of Cottingley Drive are the tower blocks of Cottingley Heights and Cottingley Towers, reputed to be the tallest flats in Leeds, while to the left is the Cottingley Housing Estate built in the early 1970s.

The railway bridge shown replaced a wooden structure which (in the 1950s at least) we knew as The Catsteps.

From this photo it doesnt look far from Beeston to Cottingley, but walking to school it seamed to be miles.

To all intents and purposes, the path that headed downhill was in alignment with 'The Cat-steps'. It went straight down the hill to cross Shaw Beck, via a narrow footbridge, after which, and an approximate distance of 85yards, it terminated on The Ring Road. There used to be a milestone in that vicinity which read; Leeds 2 miles Huddersfield 13 miles. I wonder where it is now.
