View from the old stone bridge which carried Old Foundry Lane across Wyke Beck prior to the 1930s, before Foundry Lane was re-routed. On the east side of the Beck Old Foundry Lane shortly was to join an old sunken lane which is still visible today. The lane is thought to date back to at least medieval times and gave access to a farm, the site of which eventually became Killingbeck Smallpox Hospital. Ancient farming in the locality is also evidenced by the lynchets, banks of earth left behind by centuries of ploughing the slope. Farmland once belonged to the Knight's Templars of Newsam and Kirkstall Abbey also had connections with the working of the land here. Image courtesy of John Garnett.
