Cross Gates Gasworks, garden
Description:
Undated. View showing the garden of Cross Gates Gasworks, taken sometime before 1945. Two greenhouses can be seen. Terraced housing on Austhorpe Road is seen in the background. The gasworks are situated off Back Marshall Street.

As well as what appears to be a nursery, there seem to be lawns, flower-beds, formal borders, pathways, and gas-lighting, giving the impression that this garden was far more extensive than this picture shows. Not knowing the area, am I to believe that this greenery belonged solely to the Gas-Works, and that it was laid out and maintained by them?

Apart from the actual gasometer - which is still there, and from where this elevated view appears to have been taken, the whole area has been a car-park serving the Crossgates Arndale Centre for many years. The rear of one side of the L-shaped centre being to the left of this scene. Having used the car-park regularly over the last twenty-years, until it out-priced itself, it is quite sad to see what an attractive haven it once was.

This picture puzzles me. As a child I used to play in the area of the former gas works in 1938-9. My friend's father worked there. The site was in a mess, with a great circular hole full of yellow water, where an earlier gas holder had been. Next door was a nursery where we used to buy plants. Access to this was from Station Road.

I think this garden was lost when a new gasholder was built in the late 30's. It was located near the junction of Back Marshall Street and Back Austhorpe Road.
