Undated. An early photograph of Chapel Street, possibly dating back to 1860. In the centre is Dial House, built in 1720, altered in 1755 and still standing, now a listed building. On the left is the mistal (cowshed) of Venties Farm, with several people standing in front.

A more recent Leodis photo of this building - now fully restored, shows it in its spectacular glory. At the time of its build, the road seen here will have been little more than a cart track. Few of today's passers-by will even notice it, let alone realise that it is over 250 years old. Apart from the church at whitkirk, and Temple Newsam House, this must be the oldest building in Halton. Of course, I graciously stand to be corrected in my assumption.

Theres a few buildings further down the road opposite the brown cow pub that have dates on the front, one is a news agents, and dates from 1744 i think. Iv noticed dial house alot of times as i was always intrigued as to how old it was, i could tell it was very old just by the top floor windows.

In many parts of the country, an upper third storey often indicates that there would have been some sort of 'cottage industry' going on there in the past ( usually something to do with cloth). Could this have been the case here?
