St. George's Hospital, sale

Undated. A sale takes place at St. George's Hospital shortly before demolition was scheduled. The hospital was situated on Wood Lane, near the junction with the A61. This is now the site of a housing complex situated around the clock tower shown in the image.

This is not Rothwell Haigh Hospital. Haigh Hospital was on Haigh Road and as you rightly say is now the site of Orchard Way.The Hospital pictured was, at the time of the picture,St. Georges Hospital on Wood Lane, Rothwell at its western end near the Jaw Bones. The Hospital was as you say a geriatric hospital, but prior to 1948 it was the workhouse for the Rothwell and, I believe, Stourton areas. The clock tower still stands,as it had a preservation order on it, and the area around it is now the site of a housing complex.

The picture depicts one of the many garden parties that were held at St. George’s Hospital, Rothwell. They were usually held in July or August to raise additional funds for the patients. Having had a look at the picture it is difficult to see which staff are actually present which would indicate what year the photograph was taken. I would have been on duty that day. My grandfather was in St. George's Hospital for two years after suffering a stroke and I never saw him again as children under twelve were not allowed to visit in those days. He died there in 1957.

When I was a young boy I lived in New Wortley and attended Green Lane School, there was a playground on the roof of the school and if you were facing to the south the tower of this hospital could be seen, I could also see it from the attic window of our house.
