Maypole, the raising of the
Undated. Image shows the ancient tradition of the raising of the 96ft (approx 29 metres) Maypole which is located near the Cross at the centre of Barwick-in-Elmet. The Maypole is the oldest in the country and each year dancing and celebration takes place around it , presided over by the elected May Queen and her attendants. The raising and lowering of the Maypole is a ceremony performed every three years. Three men were appointed at a public meeting to take on the task. Insurance costs and health and safety measures have led to break in tradition and in 2008 a crane was used to raise the Maypole, while still maintaining as many of the traditional rituals as possible.

The maypole dancing takes place in Hall Tower hill by the local school children around scaled down versions of the Mappole and this takes place every three years (Not as stated in the description of every year). I performed maypole dancing in 1975 and 1978.
