Churwell Hill, drawing showing the wreckage of Tramcar 191 after a fatal accident
12th May 1923. Drawing by Eric B. Farr showing the wreckage of Tramcar 191 after it lost control on Churwell Hill, close to the old Town Hall and crashed near Ingle's leatherworks on 12th May 1923. The crash occurred when the tramcar was derailed and hit a wall before overturning. The impact separated the top deck from the lower deck and seven people were killed, with many others sustaining injuries. Two of the men lost their lives in a brave attempt to stop the tramcar, which was conveying passengers who workeed at W.L. Ingle Ltd., leatherworks. Image from the David Atkinson Archive.
